CALLING ALL CAT OWNERS! Are you a DO-GOODER?

YESTERDAY'S NEWS National Contest to Award Cat Owners Who Do Good for Their Cats, Home and Environment

September 2009

Every day, consumers make choices to help make the world we live in a brighter, greener place.  In fact, more than half of Americans believe it is important to preserve the environment in which we live1. This includes millions of cat owners who are taking steps to help keep their cats, homes and world happy and healthy.

To celebrate the good choices millions of cat owners across the country make in their everyday lives, Yesterday's News(r) brand cat litter is announcing a national contest to search for and reward "Do-Gooders."  The Yesterday's News Do-Gooder Awards Contest invites cat owners to share the simple ways they are "doing good" by incorporating eco-friendly habits into their everyday lives.  Consumers can enter the online contest at www.yesterdaysnews.com/dogooder from now until October 23, 2009.

"Whether it's using an alternative cat litter, turning off the water when brushing their teeth or recycling the daily newspaper, Yesterday's News wants to recognize the good, green choices people are making in their everyday lives," said Renée Loux, author of  Easy Green Living, host of  "It's Easy Being Green" and spokesperson for the Yesterday's News contest.  "We will be awarding three 'Do Gooders' with $5,000 for themselves and awarding $15,000 to a local eco-friendly project to benefit their community."

Yesterday's News is a cat litter made from recycled materials including paper and sawdust.  The environmentally-friendly cat litter takes items that could otherwise end up in landfills and turns them into high-quality litter that is good for cats, the home and the environment. On average, 20,000 tons of paper is recycled into Yesterday's News each year.

If you were awarded $15,000 to "do-good" in your local community, where would you want the money to go?  That is the question Yesterday News(r) is asking cat owners who enter the contest on www.yesterdaysnews.com.   Cat-owning do-gooders are invited to submit a short essay (300 words or less) that describes how they "do-good" for their cat, home or environment, and to select how they would like to "Do Good" in their community from the following choices:

* Providing an eco-friendly makeover of the cat habitat in their local shelter;

* Participating in a green clean-up in their city or town; or

* Creating or enhance a local recycling program.

"It's really simple to integrate 'green' lifestyle practices into your daily life - whether it's for yourself, your pet or your home," noted Loux.  "As a cat owner and cat lover, I know how important it is to make eco-friendly choices that help keep cats and our homes happy and healthy. We want to hear the bright choices cat owners across the country are making in their daily lives."

The entries will be judged by an independent judging panel based on the following criteria:  creativity, composition and originality (60%); and appropriateness to contest theme (40%). Loux will then select the three Grand Prize Winners and subsequently develop an eco-friendly solution or blueprint design for each of the three local beneficiary organizations that the winners choose to receive the $15,000 award.  In addition, the three Grand Prize Winners will each receive a $5,000 cash award and one-year supply of Yesterday's News brand cat litter.

"Yesterday's News helps consumers make good choices for their cat, their home and their environment," said Sheridan Budin, brand manager, Yesterday's News.  "To further our mission, we are proud to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant a tree on behalf of every qualified entrant in the Yesterday's News Do-Gooder Awards Contest."
