Renewable Energy Rate

Alabama Power Contact: Hal Wadsworth (205) 257-1460
July 2003 - The Alabama Public Service Commission approved a new renewable energy rate rider that Alabama Power Company is now offering to its residential customers. Under the Renewable Energy Rate, customers can purchase 100-kWh blocks of power generated from renewable energy sources for an additional $6.00 a month, or a premium of 6¢/kWh above the standard rate. The initial source of the green power will be Alabama-grown switchgrass co-fired in a utility-owned coal-fired power plant. Participating customers must subscribe for a minimum of one year. Alabama Power serves 1.3 million electricity customers in southern Alabama.
