Homemade DIY Vanilla Extract
Homemade vanilla extract is as easy at it gets. Vanilla + vodka + time = ample, inexpensive stash of this divinely flavored extract. I like to split the vanilla beans so the seeds mix in with the extract as it steeps. Every fall I make a big batch to bottle for holiday gifts. It's a gift that keeps giving!
Yield: 8 oz.
3 whole vanilla beans
1 cup vodka
glass jar or bottle with tight fitting lid
Spilt the vanilla beans with a paring knife or cut with kitchen scissors.
Place in a clean glass jar or bottle and cover with vodka.
Let steep in a cool, dark place for at least 6 weeks, and up to 6 months.
Give it a good shake every once in a while.
Keeps indefinitely in a cool, dark place.
